Gathering of Family, Friends and Colleagues Bet On Their Favorite
SARATOGA SPRINGS – “Hey is Art Gonick still here? Don’t put that in your blog!” Matthew Veitch joked as he announced his candidacy for term number six as Saratoga County Supervisor; one of two representing The City of Saratoga Springs. I’m no pushover, but of course I agreed.
A couple of things related to this up front. What Matt was referring to was a complete joke. If you were there, you heard it – and really, you HAD to be there. But the more important reason I agreed to Matt Veitch’s request automatically was because of his record of constituent service that he acquired during his 10 years / 5 terms as Supervisor. I can say that, during that time, everything I asked him for; indeed, everything he promised me in my FORMER life as a political journalist – he delivered.
Moreover, Matt usually over-delivered – and the crowd of well-wishers, comprised mostly of family, friends and colleagues were gathered at Artisanal Brew Works (41 Geyser Road) as much to acknowledge that fact, as the fact that he made official what everyone in the room knew was coming – he is running for a sixth two-year term. That, and the fact that his approach to his office has in many ways busted the lines of what might be considered traditional Elephant Party doctrine. For instance, he pioneered and shepherded the County’s Trails Committee, while working with his colleagues to help foster the conditions which brought forth economic development – a fine case in point was the scene in which this evening’s fun took place.
Artisanal Brew Works – Hello! Where have you been all my life?
So, the vibe was more Veitch family picnic with campaign buttons than anything else. Like I take great pains to say – this is not a political blog, but there are times when you have to acknowledge a good guy doing a great job – in whatever field he/she works in…
If he happens to be a politician – so be it. If that sounds like an endorsement – so be it too.
Can we get to the beer now?
Kudos to our hosts – Artisanal Brew Works. For many, this was their first visit. It says here it won’t be their last. Visit their website and make a point to put it on your dance card. You won’t be sorry. For those so inclined, the Brew Works shares quarters with Upstate Distilling. Gosh, the research never ends, does it? Pardon me, Sheriff, but I gotta go… TAXI!
