SSHS Freshman Catherine (Dolly) Cairns Tabbed For All-Section 2 Squad
SARATOGA SPRINGS – Saratoga Springs High School Freshman Catherine (Dolly) Cairns has been bestowed a big post-season honor – being named to the Section 2 all-star team. The 5′ 7″ freshman, who joined the Blue Streaks as starting point guard last year (in the 8th grade) led her team in scoring (349 pts.), 3-point field goals (40), free throws attempted (85), free throws made (67) – a 79% clip!
Dolly scored in double figures in all but 2 of the Blue Streaks’ 21 games, topping 20 points in six of them, and had a season-high of 32 on January 10 vs. Albany High School. The Blue Streaks finished the 2016-17 season with a 12-6 record in Suburban Council play (14-7 overall) (both .667 winning clip), finishing fourth in the Suburban Council’s tough Gray Division, which had the eventual Section 2, Class AA Champion Shenendehowa.
Based on her performance as an eighth grader, this reporter wrote in February, 2016:
“Throughout the history of basketball, one of the distinctive things is that many of the stars get to be known by just their first name. Today, you have LeBron and Steph. Before that – Michael and Shaq. Before that – Larry, Magic, Kareem and Wilt. You get the idea.
On the local basketball scene, those in the know, already know that there is a new first name to know. And that name is Dolly.”
Dolly’s teammate, Sophomore Kerry Flaherty, who had a fine season – finishing second in all team stat categories, was named to the Section 2 third team.
Hey, Phil Jackson! How about these two for your Triangle offense? Just sayin’…
