5 Tips On How To Get Better Service In A Restaurant
By Nancy Muldoon

Ever wonder why some customers get better service than others? Most customers simply don’t understand how a restaurant works; that’s why people who work or have worked in restaurants almost always get top notch service. Below are five tips on how to get better service. Bon Appetite!

#1- Read The Menu:

Yes, it’s understandable you are annoyed that you have to wait for your server to get to your table on a busy Saturday night; however have the courtesy to know what you want when he or she gets to your table. There is nothing more annoying for a server than having to “babysit” and read your customers the menu.

#2- Be Attentive and Approachable

When your server comes over to greet you and take your order, all conversation no matter how interesting or involved should end momentarily. Just as you want your server to be attentive to your needs you should do likewise. Make yourself as approachable as possible, you want your server to smile and be courteous, servers enjoy waiting on people who do likewise.

#3- Never Ask For Separate Checks

This is actually considered Taboo in the restaurant industry. Here is why: If you don’t trust the people you are dining with to pay their fair share then you shouldn’t be dining with them! If you have the audacity to ask for separate checks on a busy Friday or Saturday night, you come across as being a thoughtless, arrogant jerk.
Side note: the majority of perpetrators of this behavior are not surprisingly, Baby Boomer women.

#4 Don’t Play Run The Wait Staff:

Remember that your server is not your personal assistant and you are not the only customer who has needs. If you need extra hot sauce, napkins or straws etc. ask for what you need when they are at your table so they are not making multiple trips to the kitchen. High maintenance customers are the number #1 reason for slow service in restaurants. Don’t be this kind of customer.

#5 Always Tip:

Your server wants to give good service to make you happy and will go out of their way to do so. If the restaurant is understaffed do not take it out on your server, talk to the manager. If you get good service you should be tipping 18-20%, anything less is considered insulting.
