In 2006, a law was passed in New York State that allows patients to seek care from a physical therapist without a prescription. Many states have had this law for well over 20 years and people seem to find it very beneficial. This law is often times referred to as “Direct Access”. We hope the following FAQs provide a better understanding of how Direct Access can benefit you!
How do I know if I should seek PT care?
As physical therapists in an outpatient setting, we treat nearly all musculoskeletal conditions. Essentially, if you are having pain, or have had an injury occur, we will evaluate you and determine if PT is appropriate. Our guideline is any pain that last more than 2-3 days that affects your daily life or recreational activities should be addressed; the quicker it is addressed the better. Remember, the earlier you seek care, the quicker you will recover. If we do our evaluation and do not feel you are a candidate for PT and/or need further assistance from you physician or an orthopedic we can assist to facilitate an appointment. We are diligently working to get to know the physicians in our area and value a close relationship with them.
Are there any restrictions with direct access?
The law states that physical therapists need to have their license for 3 years in order to treat without a prescription. Also, treatment can last 30 days or 10 visits, whichever comes sooner. If you want to continue past those requirements you will need a prescription to continue. Most patients can significantly improve within this time frame.
Does my insurance company pay if I do not have a prescription?
Roughly 80% of insurance companies in our area honor Direct Access, meaning that they will pay for services. When you call our office, we will verify your insurance benefits and then inform you if your insurance will cover direct access. If your insurance company does not cover your visits without a prescription, there are a few options: 1) come into PT for an evaluation and we can discuss your case with you and your doctor to see if we can get a prescription, 2) self pay for PT services, 3) visit your family physician and request a prescription (most times you will need to go in for an appointment).
