We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you all to the “Care in Motion” blog! Sports Physical Therapy of NY,PC has been part of the Saratoga community for well over 10 years and we wanted to give back to our community by hosting this blog!
As you follow our blog each week, you will receive educational pieces from the eyes of a physical therapist. Our posts will include information on injuries, pain, wellness, and injury prevention. Please feel free to respond to a post or email us with any questions or topic suggestions! We will gladly provide you with more information as long as it in our scope of practice.
So what is Physical Therapy? We believe PT is an outstanding profession focused around not only assisting recovery from an injury, but also to assist with resolving any aches, pains, and/or functional limitations you may be experiencing. Physical therapy is not just for athletes and post-operative treatment. Having pain that limits your function and affects your life is not normal and should be addressed! SPTNY is an out-patient clinic. We treat physical and orthopedic impairments such as acute injuries, post-operative care such as joint replacements or repairs, balance impairments, deconditioning, generalized pain, and limitations to function. Physical therapy can help to identify the source of your pain and factors that may be contributing to your pain. Muscle weakness, loss of joint mobility and loss of flexibility can lead to break down in other areas. These issues can be corrected with manual physical therapy and specific exercises.
Our education process has evolved and is now a Doctoral profession. The program, lasting at least 6 years, enables dedicated students to learn all about the anatomy of the human body, manual techniques, exercise prescription and many other areas with a heavy focus on research and evidence based practice. Along with having various clinical internships throughout the length of the program, medical facilities now offer residencies and fellowships to further advance our profession.
What should you expect from a physical therapy evaluation? It is essential that we look at each patient individually to understand their specific needs based on their activity level and specific deficits. Our evaluation is the most important time and we truly listen to what is going on with your body. The first session is at least 30 minutes of one on one time during which we take a very extensive history and then evaluate many different areas of the body including how your joints move, your range of motion, your strength and your flexibility. It is our time to identify the areas on which to focus in order to make your program and ultimately get you back to functioning with no pain. After this initial visit, we then decide how many times a week we need to see you in order to best achieve your goals and physical therapy goals – this can range typically from 1-3 times per week. In the follow up sessions, we put the plan in action as well as continually assess your body and your needs.
We hope you find this blog useful and interactive! Please post here or email saratogasprings@sptny.com with any thoughts along the way!
