Bolton Landing is a wonderful place to be in the summer. After a day out on the boat or a nice hike, we usually like to head over to The Boathouse or The Algonquin for a drink and or an app. We decided to stay overnight this time and thought that we would walk around the quaint little town and find a place to grab dinner. I’ve heard that Cate’s was good so we decided to try that.
The other indication that it must be good was the fact that it was 8:30 at night and still packed. We were seated outside which was great since it was the perfect summer night. Our not so friendly waitress came over to take our drink order and we decided to get the jalapeño poppers while we looked over the menu (they charge extra for your standard bread and butter). I’m a fan of anything fried and these were definitely good but they were your standard poppers. I of course burnt the roof of my mouth on them like I always do because I’m impatient and even said that I should wait but I didn’t. Oh well, they were good and the cold beer helped to cool things down a bit. We decided on the white pizza since that’s what was recommended to me. It came with ricotta and mozzarella and we had them add broccoli to cancel out the cheese ☺. What I loved about the pizza was that the crust was pastry like. It had a flakiness to it that reminded me of a croissant which was very good. It was different from what you would normally see. They topped it off with a generous amount of ricotta and mozzarella which made for a wonderful richness that we really enjoyed.
They use a lot of fresh ingredients too. There were planters outside filled with different herbs including a ton of basil.
All in all the food at Cate’s is good but it’s not the best pizza I have ever had. If you are looking for decent food in the Bolton Landing area, it’s worth checking out. Their menu is simple and offers what you would expect from an Italian restaurant. I would like to go back and try some of the other pizza varieties but would probably skip the appetizers since they are pretty standard fare. Have you eaten at Cates? What did you think?
Cate and her husband Buddy own the restaurant and have been long time residents of the Bolton Landing area. Their goal was to bring their family and life experiences into a successful local business. Buddy started off as a US Navel cook 43 years ago and has since owned a few restaurants in the area. His passion for food was established at a young age and after raising 3 boys, Buddy and Cate decided to follow their dream of opening up a hometown restaurant which they did 19 years ago. Their youngest son has decided to join them keeping this great little restaurant in the family. Towards the end of the night, Cate came out to visit with some family that happened to stop by.
