If you MUST continue through the Battenkill Valley and on into Vermont, look for an outhouse with a “man” sitting inside with the door open, reading the paper, and be sure to stop at the Wayside General Store. Now, Vermont is famous for its ubiquitous general stores but the Wayside is quintessential; the very model of what an old-time general store should be. And that’s not just my opinion.
In fact, the Wayside is featured on the back cover of Vermont General Stores, a book featuring these anachronistic beauties. The floors creak. The Vermont Cheddar cheese sits beneath a glass dome, ready for slicing. There are groceries, fishing and hunting supplies, local news and gossip…pretty much anything you need. It’s one of my favorite places. It will be one of yours, too.
