As you’re heading east out of Cambridge about five miles you’ll see a road on your left called Eagleville Road. Take it and almost immediately you’ll see a fisherman’s pull off; a nice place to park and wet your toes and get up close and personal to the world’s most beautiful river. A stone’s throw from there is the Eagleville Covered Bridge, which was newly and exhaustively refurbished a couple of years ago. It’s gorgeous, as is the cluster of homes in Eagleville just on the other side of the bridge. Take your dog for a walk, or bring your bicycle and ride around. Very nice.
Next, continue heading east on Rt. 313 and you’ll pass Battenkill Valley Outdoors, an adventure in the making I’ve spoken of recently. Then there’s Murray Hollow Road. This mysterious path takes you deep into the heart of the mountains leading into Vermont. (Look closely and you’ll spy the cement pillar that marks your entry into Vermont.) It’s a cool ride with a mix of hunting camps and nicely manicured homes, ending in a “T” that leads you even deeper into the woods on Vermont on rugged paths built more for hiking than driving. Oh, and look for the OPEN sign outside of Murray Hollow Bakery and if it’s waving, stop in and pick up a couple loaves of freshly-baked artisan bread. Now that’s a cool way to impress your date!
