{"id":54,"date":"2008-10-15T18:31:21","date_gmt":"2008-10-15T22:31:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saratoga.com\/adventures\/2008\/10\/ora-phelps-nature-preserve.html"},"modified":"2017-11-27T07:49:30","modified_gmt":"2017-11-27T12:49:30","slug":"ora-phelps-nature-preserve","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saratoga.com\/adventures\/2008\/10\/ora-phelps-nature-preserve\/","title":{"rendered":"Ora Phelps Nature Preserve"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5732 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saratoga.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2016\/07\/ora_phelps.jpg\" alt=\"ora_phelps.jpg\" width=\"445\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.saratoga.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2016\/07\/ora_phelps.jpg 445w, https:\/\/www.saratoga.com\/adventures\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2016\/07\/ora_phelps-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 445px) 100vw, 445px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Town of Wilton<\/li>\n<li>Size: 18 Acres<\/li>\n<li>Scenery: Forest, Streams<\/li>\n<li>Terrain: Natural, Boardwalk<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Trip Tip: Saratoga P.L.A.N.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Although a small parcel of open space, this land is a plant and animal sanctuary at the confluence of Little Snook Kill and Pippenbeck Brook.\u00a0 It is also part of the former homestead of the renowned Adirondack Naturalist Dr. Orra Phelps.\u00a0 Dr. Phelps (1895 &#8211; 1986) was a medical doctor by trade, who moved to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saratoga.com\/real-estate\/wilton-ny\/\">Wilton<\/a> in 1918.\u00a0 Dr. Phelps was an active member of the Adirondack Mountain Club, a twice over 46er, (someone who climbed all 46 peaks over 4000 feet in the Adirondacks) educator and author of several ADK guidebooks.\u00a0 On this land along with her mother, Orra Almira Parker Phelps, she cultivated a variety of native and foreign plants to the region.\u00a0 The Phelps particularly concentrated on nurturing a diverse fern garden.\u00a0 Make sure to bring various field guides in order to identify the ferns and wildflowers that now thrive along the two streams.\u00a0 After a strong rainfall or during spring runoff the sound of water running over the exposed rock streambed fills the air as you leisurely walk under the canopy of white pines and hemlock trees.\u00a0 Saratoga P.L.A.N. maintains the trails and signage at this destination.<\/p>\n<p>The trial heads east from the parking area and is well marked with white diamonds.
