The Saratoga Monument was constructed in 1877 and is now part of the Saratoga National Historic Park. The monument was built to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the victory over the British Army at the battles of Saratoga. The monument stands on the location were General Burgoyne’s army was encircled and finally defeated. In 1987 the monument was closed do to unsafe conditions. After a 3 million dollar renovation by the National Park Service, the monument was reopened in 2002. The rock faced granite obelisk is over 150 feet tall and can be seen off in the distance as you ride east from the City of Saratoga Springs. The monument sits on a well maintained two acre grassy knoll. Make sure to climb the stairs to the top of the monument for a panoramic view of the Green, Adirondack and Berkshire Mountains.
This route heads east out of town through some of Saratoga Counties most scenic farmland. Sections of the Fish Creek, as it flows toward the Hudson River, can be seen along the way. There are a few gentle hill climbs to keep your leg muscles working. When you crest a hill at about 9 miles, look up to catch a glimpse of the monument off in the distance. Go on this ride when the monument is open, so you can enjoy the Gothic and Egyptian architectural features on the inside.
Ride Directions: Start in Congress Park and ride east out of town on Union Ave (Rte 9P). Continue over the Northway to Meadowbrook Rd at 2.5 miles on your left. At 6.5 miles Rte 68 veers off to the right. Continue on Burgoyne Rd for another 5 miles, spinning your way to the Monument.
